In season, the Medulin riviera transforms into party central. The harbour embankment throngs with holiday-makers, bar terraces heave and locals prepare themselves for a night at one of the big discotheques. Riding the wave, the Brit-run Bura Bar proved the big success of 2006, gaining UK press, although its future is currently uncertain.
Bura Bar
This wooden shack by the sea was set up by Sam Gore and two friends from North London. The bench seating is set out under a makeshift roof on the terrace and the only nod to interior decor is the small mosaic at the edge of the concrete floor. But with direct access to the sparkling Adriatic to look out on, who needs comfort? Famed for its non-stop reggae all summer, the Bura Bar made a big splash in 2006 but the folÂlowing winter it was up for sale. Whether the Bura keeps on jamming through 2007 remains to be seen.

Konoba Mizerija
This fishermen's konoba is opened 365 days of the year and, more often than not, nigh on 24 hours a day. If you tire of the tourist traps this is where to head. The large, roofed terrace is right on the edge of the harbour and the locals regularly collect here to talk fishing and shoot the breeze. If you're hungry Mizerija serves good, honest fare and if you're here out of season you can take your meal inside in front of the open fire.
